. My cattery is holistically health based and I work with an integrative care veterinarian, following the cautionary guidelines she gives on vaccines and other drugs /chemicals. It is our belief that waiting until the kitten has had a chance to develop its own immune system for 4-6 months prior to giving shots will render those shots both more effective and minimize potential adverse reactions. Mother cats pass on many antibodies to their kittens, which stay in their system for quite a while , allowing adequate time for the kitten’s own system to develop in a protective way. As long as the kitten’s diet is a healthy one ( minimal processing and limited real food ingredients with adequate moisture ), you have his or her best health insurance built-in . If you choose to vaccinate , I suggest distemper be done at 4 months and rabies at 6, having individual shot done per visit , rather than bundles or combos . This again , is per the advice of my integrative veterinarian. My parent cats have all been tested for FeLV/FIV and HCM and are clear for those and all other illnesses. The cats are indoor , so there is no risk of acquiring anything for which the multitude of shots is typically given to young kittens. I give a one year heath guarantee against genetic illness and guarantee their health when they leave my home. They have been to my veterinarian and have had a wellness exam , for which you will get a health certificate. They were given a conventional dewormer by the vet at that exam .
