When a Queen is put in the space with the male and is heat, ready to mate, you will notice specific behaviors from both of them. First the Queen may “flirt” with the boy, prancing around him and presenting herself. He will show interest by smelling her and gauging her reaction to him. In some cases the pair will romance each other (for lack of a better term) for a while, sometimes for a couple of hours. This may include them grooming each other, pawing at each other, and even chasing each other. You may hear them vocalizing to one another in their own language that which would indicate the readiness to mate. For some strange reason, they’ll swat at each other and look as if they’re angry. This is normal behavior. When the Queen is ready, she will allow the Male to mount her, biting her neck and working toward copulation. The male will work on inserting his penis for a short period of time before he has success. Sometimes its a few second, sometimes its a few minutes. A successful mating can be identified with an outcry from the female. She makes this noise because the barbs on the penis are painful. She may even hiss, swat and chase the boy away into the corner! The female will be doing the “fish flop” (as breeders call it), rolling all over the flop frantically and even throwing herself around. She’ll also clean her genitals. The male will watch her from a safe distance, and usually clean his genitals. After a few minutes, they’ll start over. It’s not unusual for cats to copulate 4 times within an hour of first introducing the male. On average the first mating occurs within 4 minutes and the second and third copulations within 5-6 minutes apart. The longer they are together, the longer the duration spans between copulations.
